How did this innovative idea come about?

Up to 120,000 trucks are currently parked on German motorways at night.

This compares with only around 625 service stations and truck stops. Inner-city and village hotels offer hardly any parking spaces — and cover only 1% of the required overnight capacity.

In addition, the digitalization of trade is an extreme driver for transport and freight traffic.

The reformed directives of the European Union contribute to exacerbating the state of emergency.

In its “mobility package”, the EU stipulates that employers have to pay for the recovery and thus for the road safety of their truck drivers.

A two-day rest period of 45 hours in suitable accommodation is required by law. The drivers’ cabs are no longer included.

Of course, the new social regulations apply not only to German motorways, but to all European long-distance routes.

The name Roatel is a combination of Road + Hotel. The idea arose as a logistical consequence of the dramatic lack of opportunities to stay overnight “on the road”.

A real unique selling point is laid down in the business plan. It promises the best comfort for a relaxing stay at the best value for money on the motorway.

This is made possible by the modular design based on standardized overseas containers in combination with the digital booking platform on the Internet.

The mobile basic module forms a maximally comfortable microhotel with four single rooms, which are installed in a spacious shipping container (45ft High Cube Pallet Wide).

The container is thermally insulated and soundproof, and an air conditioning system is used for individual heating or cooling. The personal safety of guests is ensured by video surveillance.

A container is set up and ready for operation in just one day. Depending on requirements at the site, the individual containers can also be assembled into larger units.

One container has four single rooms, each with an area of 7.5 sqm. The ceiling height of 2.50 m and the large window create a pleasant ambience.

Each room is equipped with a 90 x 200 cm bed, toilet, shower, bench with table, storage, wardrobe and electric shutters.

WiFi and satellite TV with many international channels on a large screen are available free of charge and unlimited.

The digital platform also ensures the best possible service for booking and use.

Reservations and billing are simply done electronically at my.roatel.com, as well as check-in and check-out.

In this way, the room key is immediately sent digitally to the guest. A special application is not required for this.
